My school friend!
Be happy, there are tears and smiles. Many people shed tears and some of them
smile and are happy as much as the width of their face.
Colorful robes with cheerful colors remind you of the dance of colors in their
mischief and ups and downs and take you back in time years ago when you started
the first day of school. The first day of school is one of the most memorable
memories of our lives.
The first day of school is a strange experience and a big event for most first
graders.
Separation from parents and spending the first hours away from home in a new
environment may not be very pleasant and will arouse various reactions in
children.
As a parent, how do you think you can prepare your child for the first day of
school and make it one of the most memorable days of your life?
Kill the giant
Maybe your child would like to take their toys and dolls to school on the day of the
celebration of flowers, so what is the first thing you can do, is to kill and destroy
the giant that the child forms in his mind from this day.
On this day, special celebrations are held for the first graders at the school, and the
presence of the parents with the children will help to encourage them.
Try to make the first day of school a happy and joyful time for your child and
avoid the do’s and don’ts of ordering and forbidding your child. Try to make this
day a big and memorable day.
Turn off the anxiety lights
First graders are introduced to new and great environments, new people, and new
rules on this day, all of which can be stressful and anxious.
Behrouz Jalili, a child psychiatrist, has some thought-provoking ideas about this.
“First graders are divided into two groups; the first group is those who have
experienced kindergarten and have experienced tolerance of being away from their
parents and are somewhat accustomed to being away from home. The second
group is those who “Experience being away from their families for the first time,
which naturally makes the work of teachers and parents so much more difficult in
the second group.”
“Parents need to have training for their children these days that includes how to
deal with others, how to get ready to go to school quickly, and how to dress
children on their own,” he said. Introducing children to some simple tips can turn
off the lights of anxiety on their first day of school.
Conversation with first graders
You may want to have a textbook provided by the school to prepare your child for
the first day of school. The present book has been prepared for this purpose: to
address a part of the concerns of students’ parents.
Tell your first grader that on the first day of school, the teacher does not ask for
lessons and does not need to be specially prepared to deal with the teacher.
Reassure him or her: “In the coming days, when you learn new things well, we can
talk to the teacher about studying and responding.”
• Tell him/her about your first day of school and the memories of that day that the
joys and brilliant experiences at school await him/her. Tell him/her how you felt on
the first day of school and how your teacher and friends treated you.
• Try to let him/her know that you have experienced the same stress and anxiety as
he/she did at school. If they have an older sibling, ask him/her to share him/her
first day of school experiences with your first grader.
Practical tips for the first day
Parents can do different and interesting things in the days before school to make
the first day of school more natural.
These can be called parental homework for the first day of school, which helps first
graders get into school with more enthusiasm:
• Take your child to school in the summer under the pretext of registering, getting a
file, and things like that, and show him or her all the interior spaces from the
classroom to the washroom. This may not be possible on the first day of school due
to the crowds of parents and children. Crossing the street where your child’s
elementary school is located will also introduce him/her to the atmosphere of his
school, which he/she has to go to every day.
• Buy storybooks for him and read where the child goes to school. If these books
have color pictures, they will help the first graders to put themselves in the form of
story characters and become more familiar with the school and its atmosphere.
• Write your child’s name, home number, phone number, and address on a piece of
paper and put it in your child’s pocket or school bag. This will give the first graders
a sense of security and comfort that will not be lost in school.
Do not send your child to school alone on the first day of school and the first
weeks. When he/she feels himself in a new and strange environment, he will feel
lonely among those around him/her who have gone to school with their parents.
The excitement of the first day of school from the night before, the morning of the
first day, depends on the sound of the class bell ringing and even returning home
with the first graders, and how much better it would be for him/her to accompany
them to spend these moments with him/her.
If this is not possible for you, go with him/her and ask your grandparents or older
siblings to accompany him/her.
Go to the market a month before school to buy stationery, bags, and clothes with
first graders. This is a good time for first graders to feel ready to go to school on
time and have a lot of school enthusiasm.
Postponing it until the last days of September will stress them out so they don’t
have to be late for school.
The do’s and don’ts of the first day of school
The first day of school has unwritten rules. Many people know them, but
sometimes they may not be able to plan carefully for this day due to their work and
professional activities, and they may have forgotten some of the do’s and don’ts as
parents.
Paying attention to these points will prepare the first graders physically, mentally,
and physically on this day:
• First graders should have a light dinner the night before school and go to bed on
time. Try to give your child a glass of water so that they can drink enough water,
on this day children will soon be thirsty because of their anxiety.
• Send first graders to school on the first day in comfortable clothes. Comfortable
shoes, a comfortable robe and mask, and tight-fitting pants will put children under
less stress on this day.
• At the end of the first day of school, listen carefully to your child on the home
way or when he or she returns home. In these conversations, you will find your
way to him /her problems and fears, and you can come up with appropriate
solutions to solve them.
• Show him/her that you would like to hear her school stories. In this way, he/she
will be encouraged to tell you what happens to him/her at school and to share
him/her problems and joys with you. Many children are afraid of the service or do
strange things. Take the school service with him/her on the first day
A solution for your child to get used to the school environment
without stress
1) Start practicing separation from home
You can start separation practices before your children go to school. To do this,
you can leave your child with a grandparent for a few hours of the day and increase
this duration over time. This will make the child less dependent on you. Parents
should think about this problem in advance and take such steps to solve it.
2) Get to know your child better
If your child is not very dependent on you, there is no need to worry. According to
Elizabeth Pantley, author of Solutions to Keep Children from Crying, “There is no
problem when preschoolers and first-time students do not have stress. You can talk
to your child about going to school.” Make their minds familiar with the
environment in which they are going. Many anxieties and stresses are caused by
the unfamiliarity of the environment in which we find ourselves. “Children need to
know where they are going to go. Be balanced in explaining such things and do not
talk too much about school, because children may take a stand against it.”
3) Play a role
Demonstrate behaviors that show what they need to do to get to school so your
child understands what he or she will face at school. Try to implement all the
movements on your child that he/she is supposed to do to go to school. For
example, getting up early, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and doing other things
that every student should do before going to school, and finally, you can say that
these are the things that he/she should be done before going to school. “With just a
little creativity and planning, you can get rid of all your baby’s anxiety and stress
and get him or her ready for school,” says Lori lite, founder of Mothers and StressFree Children.
4) Create a calendar for the countdown
Make a calendar and share it with your child to show the number of days left until
the new year. The calendar should be such that as you approach the reopening of
schools each day, the number of days decreases and eventually ends with the
school day. This prepares your child’s mind for school. You can enter the date of
each day into a small square using the input environment. When the day is over,
cut or paint it. Try to leave the painting of the finished days to your child.
5) Find friends and classmates for your child
Try to get statistics from the neighbors about the children who are going to be your
child’s classmates through the school management. You can do this before school
starts. Maybe kids who were in the same class as your preschooler, be classmates
with him/her in elementary school. In this case, you can reassure your child that
he/she has friends he/she had in preschool during this period as well. This in itself
becomes a strength of heart for your child.
6) Go to the store together to buy school supplies
As you know, most teachers today, a few weeks before the start of classes, ask
parents to provide the necessary educational equipment for their children. Even if
you do not have such items, you still know that; bag or backpack, colored pencil,
drawing book are essential accessories for the student. Knowing this, go to the
store with your child to get the items he/she want. This shopping can be fun for
both you and your child. Allow your child to get what he or she likes from
educational materials at your discretion and, of course, with your guidance. This
can give your child a good sense of the school.
7) Adjust your child’s sleep schedule
Many children fall asleep in the afternoon due to the hot and long days of summer.
You need to set your child’s sleep for school time before school starts. You can
gradually reduce their sleep, for example, reduce their sleep by 15 to 30 minutes a
day. In this way, when the school season begins, your child’s internal sleep time is
set.
8) Read storybooks for kids regularly
“Imaginary characters are a way to create difficult situations because they always
have a happy ending,” says Shannon Choe, founder of Premier Baby Concierge.
“Such stories can give your child confidence.” ” Try to look for storybooks that
have a happy ending. These books will lift your child’s spirits.”
9) See the classroom before classes start
If you have access to the school where your child is going to study, you can, in
coordination with the relevant authority, introduce your child to the classes in
which he or she is going to attend. This creates a background for children to
become more familiar with the classroom environment and learning environment
before school starts.
10) Prepare equipment before going to bed
Teach your child to prepare their school supplies, such as clothes, backpacks,
school supplies, and food, at night before going to bed. These exercises prepare
them for going to school. When they wake up in the morning, they may forget
some of their belongings due to drowsiness. This also allows them to get a little
more sleep in the morning.
11) Arrive on time on the first day of school
On the first day of school, try to set your child’s alarm clock half an hour before the
baby service arrives. When your child wakes up on time and eats his breakfast
calmly, he/she will be more focused on going to school. Encouraging children to
get to school on time can also be an effective way to wake them up early in the
morning.
12) Put your child’s favorite toy in his school bag
If your child is very interested in a small thing like a doll at home, put it in his or
her backpack so that during school hours, when he or she feels homesick, look at
the device or doll he/she loves. “A familiar device can stimulate a child’s memory
even though sniffing,” says Thomas Seman, a pediatrician in Boston, USA. In
general, objects that evoke mother memories for children can relieve anxiety».
